How We Treat TMJ Disorder
Before we can offer treatment recommendations, you’ll receive a thorough evaluation from Dr. Gilsdorf. This usually involves diagnostic imaging as well as a tactile examination where Dr. Gilsdorf will place his hands on your jaw joints and have you open and close your mouth. Based on his findings, he may recommend one or more of the following treatment options:
Occlusal Splints
Occlusal splints are customized mouthguards that are designed to keep your mouth in a set position as you sleep to minimize strain and tension on your jaw joints. The splints will also keep your teeth from grinding, which could lead to dental damage and further harm to your temporomandibular joints if left unchecked.
Equilibration/ Occlusal Adjustment
In some cases, TMJ disorder can be caused by an uneven bite due to misshapen teeth or ill-fitting restorations. Equilibration, also known as occlusal adjustment, may be recommended. This process involves adjusting the structure of a tooth or crafting a better-fitting restoration to even out the bite and reduce jaw joint strain.
BOTOX® Injections
BOTOX injections can help reduce strain in the facial muscles that surround the jaw joints. They provide short-term relief for patients experiencing severe TMJ symptoms, such as lockjaw and debilitating pain. Typically, we recommend that patients come in every three or so months for renewed relief through BOTOX injections for TMJD in Manhattan.
