What are Dental Implants?

Dental implants are small titanium posts that are surgically placed below the gumline and within the jawbone to restore the missing root structure of one or more teeth. Because titanium is biocompatible, it’s able to naturally fuse with the bone through a process called osseointegration. This creates an unwavering support system for any type of prosthetic to be attached to, like a free-standing dental crown, bridge, or denture, depending on how many teeth you’re missing.

The 4-Step Dental Implant Process

  1. Consultation: In order to determine whether you’re a good candidate for dental implants, you must schedule a consultation with Dr. Gilsdorf. He will examine your mouth and X-rays and speak with you about your goals. If you qualify for the treatment, he will create a treatment plan for you, walk you through it, and answer any questions you may have.
  2. Implant Placement: We use customized surgical guides to place our implants at the perfect location and depth within the bone to provide your restoration with the most support. Due to Dr. Gilsdorf’s extensive implant training, we can complete the surgical placement in-house.
  3. Healing & Abutment: After your surgery, it will take between three and six months for the implant posts to fuse with the bone. Once that happens, we will attach small metal connector pieces called abutments to the top of the implants. This will also require a short recovery period before we move onto the next step.
  4. Restoration Attachment: After your final restoration is completed, it will be sent to our office to attach to your dental implants and complete your smile!
